Starting The New Year Right

Mimi forgot the black eyed peas and corn bread meal this year, so to make up for it, let's do the Viennese ritual and join the Vienna Boys Choir and sing "The Beautiful Blue Danube" together. I'll bet you didn't know there were words to this thing.

And as we slide further into the crapper that our Betters have made for us, let's remember the old Viennese saying, "The situation is hopeless, but not serious."

The older I get, the more I turn into my father. He loved Strauss waltzes, and his prize possession was an old recording of Die Fliedermaus starring Elizabeth Schwarzkopf.
I've come to love them myself over time. My particular favorite is Roses From The South.

We brought in the new year with black eyed peas in rice with kielbasa --kind of a Southern Brooklyn California thing.

Leg of Pork, Roasted, Chutney
Piñon (Plantains, layered this time made with all veggies, cheese and mole)
Spicy Cauliflower Stur Fry

They loved it and the ¨Virgin of the New Year¨ processed by the house in the middle of it all...bomblike and gorgeous fireworks, incense wafthing.

Happy Everything!

My father loved Strauss waltzes, too. I grew up with them and Souza's marches, and the Gay Nineties (no, not those gays) songs, and jazz, and Der Bingle, lots and lots of music. We didn't have a pot to pee in, but we had books and music.
